Mary is a medical doctor in her workaday life, so we were all very well cared for when we got boo-boos. Mary appears here in a rare moment of unselfconscious cleanliness just before our departure for the Annapurna Region. Through most of the trek, to her lasting displeasure, Mary found herself president of the search-for-a-shower club, on a mission that regularly proved futile.

But missing a shower could not defeat Dr. Mary, who dug deep into her British reserves and stank just like the rest of us. The next day the search continued, and the next day...and the next...and the next...
